New Puppy

Ok, so you’ve had your new puppy a couple of weeks now and everything is going fine. Your getting there with the toilet training and he’s eating well and fun to be around.  You reach for the brush and he runs and hides!  After you manage to coax him out from under the bed, you try again.  This time he thinks the brush is a toy and starts to chew it......then figures your hand tastes so much nicer and decides to have a munch at that too.  Under no circumstances are you allowed to put the brush near him, if you do, he squeals like a pig and you stop because you think you’re hurting him.   We’ll try again tomorrow......and try again....and again.....and.....before you know it 6 months has passed, he’s covered in matts, hates the sight of the brush and you have no hands left, you’ve given up and he’s won!      ROUND ONE TO PUPPY!

SOUND FAMILIAR?????

This story is heard all too often at the groomers. 50% of puppy first grooms end up with the coat having to be shaved off to enable the owner to start again with a new grooming routine.  The groomer usually gets the blame of shaving your puppy, but we’ve actually been kind in removing the discomfort of a matted coat.  A visit to the groomers a couple of weeks after your puppy has had its second jag could result in a lifetime of happy grooming at home.
15 minutes of your time with a professional groomer = happy puppy!

If you like him fluffy and are managing to keep the coat tangle free, you don’t need to have the coat cut at all.  The hair around the eyes, in between the pads, in the ears and sanitation areas can all be trimmed.  The claws can be cut too - we at Snippets Grooming call this a ‘Top & Tail’.  This gets puppy used to being handled at the groomers and makes visits good fun too!
